New Year 2011

Happy New Year, Good Luck and Success!

The year 2010 has just left following by the year 2011. Still, there're something new to be considered and also something old to be continued. This year, I spent my special time alone in the room and busy with Internet for the full night.

On the other hand, I've been here for almost three months, where I have to be only for 3 years to complete a rigid research work for my dissertation. During the passing month, I did mostly on revision (papers and report) concerning the research area. Therefore, there're still many thing to do in term of reading or revision to seek for appropriate research methodology to conduct this research. I have proposed and prepared a tentative research topic "The Impact of Rapid Urbanization to Hydrogeological System in Siem Reap, Ancient City of Cambodia". Accordingly, three main objectives have be determined:
  • Understanding groundwater flow systems
  • Modeling the solute transport (from landfill area)
  • Producing groundwater vulnerability map
For these designed objectives, it is basically depend on some tools of computer applications. Therefore, I've intended to applying FEFlow and ArcGIS for simulating and visualizing the research. The modeling will be adapted for the first two objectives where Finite Element Method (FEM) would be chosen corresponding to FEFlow program. Consequently, it is essential to have good ability in code writing in transforming from conceptual model to mathematical model and inteprert it into computer language. Up to now, my basic understanding in mathematical formulas and algorithm is very poor. Need to be study more!!!!!!!!!

Moreover, the groundwater vulnerability is also a hot issue to be studied in Siem Reap in case this city have been mostly relying on groundwater resources as main source for the water suply. The idea of this research is to identify the zone of vulnerable groundwater contamination. Hence, some methods (such as DRASTIC) will be needed combining with some tools (in this case ArcGIS) to produce valuable map. As reason, selecting appropriate method and deep understanding ArcGIS are needed to achieve the third objective.

New year, new idea and perception, still there're something to continue and be considerably finished!

Happy New Year, good luck and success!

Groundwater and surface water interaction

Surface water commonly is hydraulically connected to groundwater, but the interactions are difficult to observe and measure. (Winter et al., 1998)

Happy Khmer New Year, 2553

The New Year, celebrated in the middle of April each year, follows the rice harvest, a break for people in the countryside, whom comprise 85 percent of the population.

The New Year heralds the start of a Buddhist year, in this case 2553, and is celebrated in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Burma, and in some parts of India.

What will happen in 2012?

The date December 21st, 2012 A.D. (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count), represents an extremely close conjunction of the Winter Solstice with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (Equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic ( path of the Sun), what that ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree. This is an event that has been coming to resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. It will come to resolution at exactly 11:11 am GMT.

Master Degree in Hydrogeology

Hydrogeology is one subject combining Geology and Hydrology together which then focuses on groundwater. Geological Engineering Department in Faculty of Eningeering of Gadjah Mada University has offered master program which held duration around two years. As I have pursued my study in this field since September 2008, I am seeking an available topic for my project research.

Up to now, I have some idea for my topic research that relates to three purposes: Groundwater table drawdown which can result in Land subsidence, Salt water intrusion, and Groundwater Management for Irrigation (GMI)Among these three interests, I am really intersting in Groundwater Management which corresponds to my background and also covers not only groundwater but also irrigation. This information proved that GMI has aleady taken part into consideration for my master degree. In addition, it was also my intention since I had applied the scholarship. Also, it is true that Cambodian economy mostly relies on agriculture in which the irrigation system has to be implemented in the right position to reach the sustainable development. In order to achieve the goal, human resource is a very important factor combining with finacial support from the government or any institution in Cambodia.

Nevertheless, I still hesitate about my selection in case I feel not comfortable with the management terminoloy for my research. I have thought, it seems that I am working for orgnization and do this kind of management to reach the socio-economy of one society. I think I will be abit away from technique ralate to groundwater.

Everything should be got done after next week, then I can proceed my project research. I have to collect documents relateing to this topic and also investigate the data to accomplish the project.

Studying Abroad

After having graduated from ITC (Institute of Technology of Cambodia), students have their own duty to be accomplished. Some of them have been to the environment of work such as site engineer, surveyor, designer, etc, else have pursued their study for master degree in different field and various countries depend on their scholarship sponsor and their background.

Being one of them, I graduated in 2008 in field of Rural Engineering related to rural infrastructure and irrigation system. I had succeeded in applying for scholarship to University Gadjah Mada (Indonesia) in field of Hydrogeology under AUN/SEED-Net program. As a freshman in Rural Engineer, I have continued my study directly, I left Cambodia for Yogyakarta, Indonesia on August 13, 2008 with 5 other Cambodian Students who had studied the same field as me in ITC. It was the firt time for me leaving Cambodia for abroad by plane, but we had traveled almost one night including transit time. The morning August 14, our plane landed in Adisut Jipto Airport, Yogyakarta, I had felt with new environment of Indonesia.

After checking out, we took the step out of the terminal, we could hear khmer language which made me feel comfortable, those were our senior, Bong Kagna, Bong Thearith and Bong Bunchoeun. They came with other two program officers to pick us up to our new boarding houses. Traveling along from the airport to our kost, I noticed that this city was not as big as I thought since I was in Cambodia. It was even smaller than Phnom Penh City. Moreover, when we arrived at our boarding house, I was surprise again it seemed become countryside. I could see many kind of trees, farm, pets, and chickens, duck, etc which make me suddenly think of my hometown, Battambang. Again, the first day arriving in this city, our senors had told us a lot about this city, Indonesian, people school.... but the important thing, we should do immediately when we arrived in other countries was that giving the information to our family in Cambodia. I had called to my father and my lady only with short words due to the limit of simcard.

The first time, we had lunch together at one resto called suka suka (mean like), which allowed us to taste Indonesian food with new style of eating without spoon or fork. In the late afternoon, we went shopping center, Plaza, the biggest in this city to buy some tools for our bed and living here. The first day had finished, we got new idea to live in new country.
